Manchester Climbing Depot

Monster Roof

With the April expansion the Manchester Climbing Depot regained the UK’s “biggest bouldering wall” crown .

Completed in time to route set before the reopening of gyms after lockdown 3. The project included 2 new matting areas separated by a carpeted walkway and a huge roof 13m wide and 15m long.

Massive sloping mats are always good fun to install. Get out the cardboard sledges but check for rogue screw heads first!!!

The wall builder Simon Wilson (theclimbingwallcompany), has previous with these “beasts”! In 2020 we installed a mat under the “Beast” roof at “Flashpoint” in Swindon. That mat sits on a on a 33 degree ramp running parallel to the climbing surface. With a bit of extra anti-gravity engineering built into the matting design.

The “Manchester Depot” roof has 4 changes in angle as the ramp tracks the angle of the climbing surface of the roof mirrors. This gives a consistent fall height as well as facilitating route setting. It was a really interesting project and a good challenge for Tim and Will who did a great job on the CAD.

“Core have been our trusted partner for matting for the last 8 years. Attention to detail is second to none, installations are meticulously planned and the fit and finish is always top quality. Nothing has been too much trouble and they have delivered on our more novel projects, such as our Manchester roof with a real ‘can do’ approach. The quality speaks for itself.”
